TECH TALK: August 2026

 

Protecting your roofing system and the assets beneath it are important. The VSH Hail Region in the Central / South Central United States is negatively impacted by hail every year. Installing hail-resistant roofing materials will help extend the life of the roof, minimize maintenance costs,  reduce the risk of operational downtime, and much more.

There is no doubt that Carlisle’s EcoStorm VSH Board is an excellent hail-resistant coverboard. It is moisture and mold resistant, approved in multiple FM Very SevereHail (VSH) assemblies, has a high compressive strength of 3,990 psi, and has high impact resilience. But there are many other characteristics of this board that make it a great choice in any assembly. This month’s Tech Talk article will highlight some of these largely unknown characteristics.

EcoStorm VSH Board Overview

  • Authentic Circular Economy Story – EcoStorm VSH is manufactured using upcycled post-consumer carton material, creating a true end-market for recovered fiber that might otherwise be landfilled.

  • Easier to Manage - EcoStorm is 30% lighter than the gypsum based VSH boards. 70 lbs vs 100 lbs. Ship 30% more on a truck. Easier handling all around. Can’t crack it. Stomp it in to corners, flex it around roof penetrations. 

  • Meaningful Landfill Diversion – Approximately 1 ton of upcycled carton material is utilized for every 1,000 square feet of EcoStorm VSH installed. A 100,000 SF roof can divert roughly 100 tons of material from landfill.

  • Supports Sustainability & EPR Goals – The product creates a tangible connection between recycling programs and commercial construction, helping support broader circular economy and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiatives.

  • Great Fit for School Districts & Public Projects – The landfill diversion story resonates particularly well with schools and municipalities. It can even be tied into educational initiatives such as "Circular Champions" recognition programs that highlight sustainability leadership.

  • Solar-Ready Performance – With a compressive strength of approximately 3,995 PSI, EcoStorm VSH provides exceptional resistance to concentrated loads, making it an excellent choice for roofs designed to support solar arrays and ongoing service traffic.

  • Metal Retrofit Advantage – EcoStorm VSH offers 15-inch flute spanability, making it well suited for metal retrofit applications where spanning wider flute openings is important.

  • Alternative to Traditional Gypsum Boards – Contractors and owners can achieve better cover board performance while gaining a compelling environmental story that gypsum-based products cannot offer. EcoStorm VSH is a much more moisture durable material than any gypsum-based product.
